It’s a Contemporary Farmhouse Kitchen Design that was part of a larger House Renovation.
The last time we worked together, we finished a full home renovation project for our customers, Bill and Tiaha. They recently bought their new house from Bill’s parents, who built the house originally. It was a custom-built two-story country house surrounded by gorgeous vegetation.
A closer inspection of the kitchen revealed several outdated elements, such as outdated oak kitchen cabinets, a countertop made from laminates, a sink that was drop-in sink, and a ceiling fan that was located in the center of the cooking area! The time it was constructed, the farmhouse kitchen was thought to be spacious and contemporary. Thirty years later, the kitchen was in dire need of a revamp.
Getting Started: A Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Design
The kitchen was a peninsula, which created an inefficient layout. To make the floor plan practical for the entire family, the kitchen had to be changed. The countertops made of plastic laminate were damaged and scratched.
`The cabinets made of oak created a dark and sombre feel in the kitchen, as did the fan on top, which an orange shade that was in the middle of the room needed to be removed. The solution we came up with was the design.
Bil, along with Tia, had been pleased with the placement and arrangement of their appliances. They aimed to have greater storage space and better flow. The kitchen layout was changed by removing the traditional 1990s peninsula to allow for an island that was large in the centre of the kitchen. The homeowners were able to have the additional storage space they desired and instantly improved the flow of the kitchen.
Cabinets Existing Kitchen Cabinetry
The next step to modernize the farmhouse kitchen’s design was to improve the lighting in the kitchen. The cabinets were basic. It was a basic set of uppers and base towards the end, a second feature from the 90s was the desk in the kitchen. The cabinets were dark and did not allow for a brighter kitchen.
Creating A Brighter Kitchen
The cabinets were painted in Sherwin-Williams Alabaster. The off-white shade matched the rustic design and added a fresh look to the kitchen. To look more appealing, we sprayed the kitchen island with Evergreen Fog.
To enhance the look, we added an island with a butcher block counter-top, the island, as well as Blanco Matrix quartz countertops along the border. The farmhouse kitchen island lets more flow throughout the kitchen. It also offers more useful storage space with ample drawers and space to fit the mini-drawer.
Installing a new sink, completing this Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Design
We then took on the sink. The sink we had was a double-bowl sink that required a bit more depth. Also, the sink’s bowl was not large enough to wash dishes. The solution we came up with was replacing the outdated sink with a huge farmhouse sink that has ample depth and width for washing dishes. It also blends with the modern farmhouse design.
As we had rearranged the layout and flow in the farmhouse kitchen and also improved the storage area, Bill and Tiaha wanted floating shelves in the vicinity of the sink that would blend into a Modern Farmhouse aesthetic. These elements came well together, creating a lighter kitchen that has a more flowing design that lets the warmth of the outdoors in!
